Great Drink Recipes for the Fourth of July

(21 and up Only)Enjoy Responsibly!

Dear Moms,

I am as we all are- well aware that Summer is fully upon us and with the stress the kids being home everyday ALL day, the Summer's holidays can add a bit more! However, I am here to try and help ease your stress- let's have a drink! So, if you are planning to cook out, or not- I have acquired a few new delicious, and refreshing additions to my bartender repertoire; enjoy these responsibly!

If you are a beer drinker, something I have most recently become, a Shandy may be just up your alley! A shandy historically were served in English pubs and traditionally consist of a half beer and a carbonated topper, think- citrus soda, or a ginger ale. In this way, it is an easy cocktail tester if you are not quite the experienced mixologist just yet! It's super simple and can be loads of bubbly fun to test the ratios and flavor combos. One ideal shandy to try if you don't want to do the experimentation on your own is a prepackaged version: Schoefferhofer Grapefruit- (pronounced: Chauffeur+ Hoff-ah) which is widely available at many local liquor stores and liquor departments of many grocery stores like Meijer! This shandy is a 50/50 mix of Hefeweizen (a German beer) and grapefruit!

For the cocktail purveyors among us, and those that are more confident in their mixology skills, I list these two yummy recipes that to me evoke true Summer vibes! The first is another shandy- in fact, a sour watermelon shandy that I ran across on glueandglitter.com! LOL they describe it as, "a sour watermelon Jolly Rancher grew up, married a beer and had a beautiful baby." Interested yet? I knew I was once I read that description! Then, I read that it has no added sugars, colors, or flavors and it's only THREE ingredients! Sweet and simple, like me!

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup chopped fresh watermelon
  • ice
  • juice of 1 fresh lemon (equal to about 1/4 cup of juice)
  • 1 12 oz bottle of your preferred vegan sour beer (if you don't have one- you can find quite a few online to help you decide!)

How To:

In your blender, puree the watermelon and lemon juice until it's nice and smooth
Divide the pureed mixture into two pint glasses full of ice and top with the beer. (We all know that pouring beer can be tricky over ice, so tilting the glass to the side is the preferred method to cut down on the "head"- aka foam!) Stirring it gently can cut down on the foaming as well as a slow pour/trickle- gently stir after the beer has been added to incorporate the watermelon mixture and garnish with a lemon round and in my case, a sprig of mint... I also like to muddle a bit of mint and add it to the watermelon puree, experiment- it IS a holiday after all!

The next and last, yummy drink treat I offer you is known as the Sweet Tea Smash. I found this one on Liquor.com and was happy to see it was not hard to create! What's more Summer than lazing on the porch with an "iced tea" and watching the fireflies come out to play? This drink will create in you, a desire for just that! How great that this holiday is the perfect night to do that while the fireworks are lighting up the sky?

Ingredients:

  • 2 lemon wedges
  • 4 mint leaves
  • 1 oz Unsweetened iced tea
  • 1 oz Tennessee whiskey (I used Jack Daniels- use your favorite)
  • 1 tsp Strega
  • 1 tsp Cane Syrup

  2. Add the remaining ingredients and fill with ice

  4. Garnish with a sprig of mint.
Last but not least, remember that it is our nation's birthday! Be glad that you live in a country where you have the freedom to enjoy a cocktail and a hot dog on the grill! Appreciate those who sacrificed and fought the good fight for us to do so! Happy Independence Day, enjoy responsibly and enjoy your family and holiday!

Until Next Time! *raising a glass*
