Learning Things About HOW to Deal with Your Kids
Dear Moms,
Do you ever feel like you have been tasked with the job of PARENT- and you aren't equipped?! Or do you have those days where you feel like I just SUCK at this whole mom gig- I could have been a stripper?! (Lol okay, maybe not the whole stripper part- but, hey you've at least thought of another profession you would have much better suited for?) I know I have- and hell, I have lived MONTHS of feeling that way; not just single days! Recently- with the kids being out of the house I have taken the time to do more research into the who, what, and why of myself and my kids. It really began with some weird astrology interest and I went deeper to learning about the intricacies of the zodiac signs... traits, habits, myths vs. truths. Once I had delved into that, I was hungry for more! I wanted to know how my sign (Taurus) related to my children's respective signs and how they clash, and or meld. For the most part my kids have signs that I can mesh well with thus, the reason why we rarely clash or bump heads. Then I began to try to understand the science behind the way they think.
I have one child who is ADHD, and I had done extensive research in regard to his condition for YEARS- since his diagnosis in Pre-K. But, I became infatuated with the Amens. They are a married couple that has developed a better way to understand the inner workings of ADD/ADHD through brain scans. THey have determined that there are seven- yes, SEVEN different types of ADD! This is due to the areas of the brain that show the most activity in these brain scans... I then discovered they have an INSTITUTE! (soooo trying now to get my ADHD child in to get a brain scan to truly narrow down his particular type of ADHD, versus my speculating on the symptoms that I have been presented and the information I have attained through my studies! I also started attending webinars to learn different things about child development and coping with having a child with special needs and not. I have a very limited network of support in the way of my parenting journey, thus I began this blog- to reach out to any moms who may be feeling the same way as a way of saying, "You are NOT alone; I feel your pain and live your struggle...you CAN do it!" I say all of this to say this:
I just completed a webinar hosted by Carrie Contey, PhD. and it was AMAZE-balls! Literally in forty five minutes, she gave me insights into my kids' brains and how they truly work. I mean, when I found out I was preggers for the first time, some almost 13 years ago- I read EVERYTHING I could get my hands on in the way of child development, and child rearing. I read everything from Dr.Spock, to What to Expect When You're Expecting; How to Talk so Kids Will Listen, How to Listen so Kids Will Talk (a book I might add my own mother had on her parenting bookshelf throughout my entire childhood!). But, in this forty five minute session I was able to get a true handle on the how and why my kids behave in certain ways!

She spoke on the way children behave when they lash out, freak out or shut down as "Stress behaviors" versus believing that when my kids are doing these things they are "misbehaving!" I was even able to spot some of these same traits in my own behaviors as a thir-*cough*-ty something year old adult person! LOL It was truly a trans-formative forty five minutes and I encourage all of you to get out there and do some research, some study and empower yourselves! You are a MOM- and in my house, that stands for: Mighty Over Mess! Any mess, be it the house, the laundry the dishes, or just whenever you feel that you are making a mess of things. Breathe, take a step back and know that YOU'VE GOT THIS!!
Until Next Time, Keep Your Head up!!
